Introduced by Emma Balch
My star book of this year’s Hay Festival has to be I Am Not a Loser. On the opening day of Hay Festival, my two sons, Seth and Bo, joined hundreds of other kids for the Hay Festival Schools Programme. They love this day-trip to the site, funded by the Welsh Government and Hay Festival.
Bo, age seven, especially enjoyed Jim Smith’s session on his Barry Loser book series and the following day we bought I Am Not a Loser at the Hay Festival bookshop. Bo plonked himself in a deckchair at the festival site and read it right through. The following day we were at the Fair on the Square in Hay, helping out with the HOWLS stand, and he persuaded me to buy the next next two books in the series. Bo sat in the market and read the next book right through … and so he has gone on throughout the week. He was outside Addyman’s Annexe at 9am one morning, waiting for them to open so he could buy the next one!
Hay Festival has finished today and Bo has read the entire series. It is just fantastic to see children absorbed in books, and chatting about what they’ve been reading.
Thanks so much to Hay Festival, to Jim Smith, and to Addyman Books for encouraging a love of reading in Bo and other kids in Hay.
