Pioneer Jews

Pioneer Jews: A New Life in the Far West by Harriet and Fred Rochlin (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1984)

Introduced by Anne Brichto of Addyman Books, Hay-on-Wye

I have promised to share some of my bookish adventures in the USA.

Here is one of the oddest books I bought on my travels. It was from the phenomenal trading post in Springdale just outside Ziona National Park. This treasure trove is owned and run by the lovely Harriet Killshorse and sells Indian jewellery and antiques as well as some very well chosen used books.

We posed this shot in an abandoned mock up wild west town just outside a place called Virgin before we drove back to Hurricane where we were spending the night. I loved the landscape and the huge spaces of Utah. If you have time look up images of Zion and Bryce Canyon – and if you visit do not miss Frontier Plunder. It was one of my favourite shops in the South West.

The book makes fascinating reading. Who would have known that Wyatt Earp’s last wife was Jewish? There are some extraordinary tales of eccentricity bravery, scandal and skullduggery. Just perfect.
