‘Funny … You Don’t Look Jewish’: A Guide to Jews and Jewish Life by Sidney Brichto

Introduced by Anne Brichto of Addyman Books in Hay-on-Wye

Today’s post celebrates:

A perfectly ripe mango

The song Yellow Bird

Giant crumpet with a locally laid fried duck egg and a dab of maple syrup

The smell of elderflower

The surreal brightness of a buttercup

Cow parsley

And the yellow books that I grabbed from my shelves are:

The Penguin Lear
Breakfast of Champions by Vonnegut – of course!
Legs Diamond
Little House of the Prairie – From a much loved set of Laura Ingalls Wilder
The Truth about Oscar Wilde – I collect him even these lurid fictional accounts
Felix Salten’s Bambi – a near perfect children’s book
The Growing Summer by Noel Streatfield – another appropriate title
The Kama Sutra – it was just there

And supporting it all a book by my late and dearly loved father who was a Liberal Rabbi in almost all senses of the word and wrote this accurate and funny guide to Jews and being Jewish.

  1. What a picture of joy – and the punny mug. Did you know that Llanishen is a suburb of Cardiff and home to the tax offices and ‘Llan’ means church and the rest for Saint Isien.
