The Road to Buenos Ayres

The Road to Buenos Ayres by Albert Londres

Introduced by Anne Brichto, co-owner of Addyman Books, Hay-on-Wye

When I was going through our boxes of books I found a few of these oddities that definitely class as book porn.

This was first published in 1928 and this is the 11th edition of 1940. It was written by Albert Londres and introduced by Theodore Dreiser.

In the blurb it is described as:

The most famous book ever written about the traffic in women – ‘witty, wise, brilliant and detached, it makes the hideous commerce in women ten times more hideous than any indignation could make it, by bringing it to life.’

John O’London’s Weekly

Alongside this are the details of other salacious reads “not for the prudish” and another title has this quotation from the Observer:

“The story of how Jenny came to fall from innocence to prostitution is grim, sarcastic, efficient.”

This is describing The Siege of Pleasure by one of my favourite authors, Patrick Hamilton. I have not got a copy of this title but will try and find one immediately.

I know people-trafficking is an age old and horrible crime but somehow I feel this book was not published to bring attention to it for the most moral reasons.
