Stig of the Dump by Clive King (Illustrated by Edward Ardizzone)
Introduced by Anne Brichto of Addyman Books in Hay-on-Wye
I met Clive King one magical day in Hay. He came in looking for his own books. He was very tall and very polite. After asking if we did children’s books he mentioned he had written some and was in the process of putting sets together for his great grandchildren. “Who are you?” I asked. “Clive King” he replied. “Stig of the Dump” I squealed. A hysterical version of the J R Hartley advert.
He and his wife were both extremely elegant and from a past and more polite time. I spent the day running around the shops collecting books for them. At the end of the day Mrs Clive King gave me the most beautiful smile and thanked me for my enthusiasm and help. “You have made an old man very happy” she said. Thank you, Clive King, you provided me with one of my top bookshops moments.
Addyman Books have three bookshops in Hay-on-Wye (Addyman Books and Murder & Mayhem on Lion Street and Addyman’s Annexe on Castle Street). They are also on Twitter and Instagram, follow them for photos and news from Hay @addymanbooks.
